Spring Lawn Care Tips: How to Get a Healthy Lawn

With spring in full swing, we’ve got all the expert lawn care tips you need for a healthy and green lawn all year long.

Spring is here and it’s time to take your lawn care to the next level. If you want thick, green grass all summer long, now is the time to start fertilizing, aerating, and tackling weeds. Follow these essential lawn care steps to ensure your yard thrives throughout the warmer months.

Examining Your Lawn

The spring lawn care tasks and products you use will depend on your lawn’s:

  • Grass type: Different grass types have different needs, so make sure you know what type of grass you have and the specific care it needs.
  • Soil type: Your soil type can affect your lawn’s health. You can conduct a soil test to determine its pH level and nutrient content. ExperiGreen includes Soil Tests in our Preferred+ Lawn Care program.
  • Shade and sun exposure: Some grass types thrive in full sunlight while others do better in shade. Take note of the areas of your lawn that receive the most sunlight and shade during the day because they may grow at different rates.
  • Drainage: Poor lawn drainage can lead to standing water and root rot. Check for areas of your lawn that collect water after rainfall. Aeration can help improve the water drainage of your lawn.
  • Weeds and pests: Early detection of weeds (like crabgrass) and pests (such as grubs or chinch bugs) help prevent major infestations later.

Steps to a Successful Spring Lawn

Raking: Raking in the spring removes lingering fall leaves and grass that did not survive the winter. If you don’t remove these, they add to your lawn’s thatch layer. The thatch layer is a layer of living and dead organic matter that builds up between the layer of actively growing grass and the soil underneath. If the thatch layer becomes excessive, it can restrict the movement of air, water, fertilizer, and other nutrients that are necessary for growth.

Aerating: If your soil is compact, aeration is the solution. Late spring to early summer is the ideal time to aerate warm-season grasses, and fall is the best time for cool-season grasses. Aerating helps the soil allow more water and nutrients to get deep in the roots of your lawn. ExperiGreen offers liquid aeration, a convenient and effective way to promote healthy root growth.

Fertilizing: Timing with fertilizer is crucial for the health of your lawn. Too early and you can risk feeding weeds and creating fertilizer run-off, too late and you miss the opportunity to nourish your lawn. ExperiGreen monitors weather conditions to apply the right formula at the right time to help your lawn get exactly what it needs.

Weed Control: Spring is the best time for pre-emergent herbicides which stop weeds before they grow. If you notice weeds already, a post-emergent treatment can help eliminate them. ExperiGreen provides season-long weed prevention and treatment to keep your lawn weed free.

Mowing: Before you start mowing for the season, sharpen the blades on your mower and remember to change the oil if needed. You should adjust the cutting height based on the type of grass in your lawn. Be careful not to cut too short on the first mow! You can mulch the grass clippings to return nutrients to the soil.

Watering: The frequency and duration of watering your lawn depends on the grass type, soil type, and weather conditions. Your lawn should get 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week through 2-3 deep watering sessions. It’s important to note that overwatering can be just as damaging as underwatering.
