Halloween Lawn Décor & How to Avoid Lawn Damage
With Halloween right around the corner, you may be thinking about what kind of Halloween or fall decorations you want to add to your property. There is nothing more festive than seeing homes decorated with pumpkins, hay bales, and other Halloween/fall decor. While there is a long list of options to choose from you may want to consider how your fall decorations may negatively impact your healthy green lawn. It’s important to remember that although lawn decorations are fun and get everyone in the holiday spirit, your lawn can become stressed if the proper prep work isn’t done.
We’ve compiled a list of tips to help you make sure your lawn is safely decorated this Halloween
Inflatables-When choosing to use inflatables in your Halloween decorations, it’s important that they are moved regularly to ensure your lawn does not become stressed. Since your lawn is a living, breathing thing it needs sunlight & oxygen to survive and stay healthy. With slowed growth during the fall, leaving large inflatables on grass for extended periods of time can cause stress to the lawn resulting in brown areas appearing. This will lead to a bigger issue that needs to be resolved in the spring.
Decor with Spikes-Make sure to remember where your irrigation system or hidden fence lines are so you do not puncture them. This will save you the time and the hassle of possibly having to call a company to repair damage in the spring!
Heavy Décor– Pumpkins, hay bales, & even bigger inflatables should be placed either on your patio or landscape/mulch areas to avoid lawn stress. As we mentioned before, leaving heavy items on your grass for long periods of time can cause a list of issues and leave your lawn susceptible to things like mold and even root tearing.
Electric Decorations-Fire safety is key! If you’re using decorations or lights that require electricity remember to make sure you’re using the proper extensions cords and that your decorations are in good working order. This means no fraying or split wires that can lead to a fire. You do not want to lose your lawn or face property damage from an unexpected decoration fire!
Keep It on A Timer-Using a timer for any lights you maybe decorating with can help minimize foot traffic on a dormant lawn decreasing the risk of stress. Timers will also help avoid any burns to your grass that may occur.
Protect Your Landscape– Remember, your trees and shrubs can become stressed out too. Hanging lights or decorations on plants that have entered their dormancy period can cause major issues. Considering the weight of these items on your trees or shrubs is smart to help in avoiding branches or limbs becoming bent or possibly broken.
As always, a lawn that is healthy makes it much easier to combat any potential stress it may face throughout the year.
