Henbit: The Winter Annual Broadleaf Weed
Happy Weed Wednesday! This week let’s talk about Henbit.
Henbit is a winter annual weed that can grow up to 16″ tall. It usually has dark pink to purple flowers with “hairy” surfaces on the leaves that point downward. You will typically see this weed in the early springtime in dry cultivated soil.
Henbit can provide valuable erosion control in croplands across the US; however, it is considered a weed in residential lawns and is not something homeowners want to see among their healthy green grass.
Henbit reproduces by seed that matures from April- June and can produce 2,000 or more seeds per plant. The good news? This weed hates warm temperatures, so as we dive into spring and temperatures rise, it will naturally die off.
