Aurora, CO

Aurora has a plethora of great ‘green spaces’ and parks – so it’s hard to feature just one – so here is a list of some great places to get away and enjoy the great outdoors in the Aurora area:

DeLaney Farm

Located at 170 S. Chambers Road, this 114-acre farmstead contains an organic community garden that is used by many of Aurora’s residents to grow their own produce. Visitors can also tour the co-op farm or hike or jog in one of the farm’s open green spaces. Trail hiking is also available, including the High LIne Canal Trail and the Toll Gate Creek Trail, that pass by Delaney Farm. The Farm is also well known for its host of historic buildings, including Aurora’s famous round barn. Wildlife abounds in the area around Delaney Farm, including coyotes, prairie dogs, and deer.

Quincy Reservoir

Bird lovers flock to Quincy Reservoir, located at 18350 E. Quincy Avenue, to view a huge variety of birds and waterfowl, including the rare Swainson’s hawks, that use the reservoir as a breeding ground. This 288-acre nature area fits naturally within local neighborhoods, so it is easily accessible for walkers and runners. The Reservoir area also features a 5-K running trail. Fishing is also a big attraction for visitors, as the reservoir is home to many large species of fish. A pass is required to use the park.

Jewell Wetlands

Another great wetland area is the Jewell Wetlands, located at 13005 E. Jewell Avenue. This 46-acre protected area sports a wetland boardwalk for visitors to view the ample displays of wildlife including ducks, loons, swans, turtles, nesting raptors, and owls. Jewell also boasts a large butterfly garden, cared for by volunteers from Aurora.

Star K Ranch

One of the key attractions at Star K Ranch, located at 16002 E. Smith Road, is the Morrison Nature Center. Visitors can tour the center and see displays of local wildlife and native fauna, while learning more about the history of the area. The 208-acre ranch is also home to many trails, including the Sand Creek Greenway Trail which is used by dog walkers, hikers, and runners alike. A large picnic area and shelter is also a favorite destination for visitors to the ranch.
