Green Places in Orland Park, Illinois:
Orland Park has one of the largest green spaces in Cook County, Illinois, with the 960-acre Orland Grassland Park. This park consists of 750 acres of a restored grassland prairie that once was farmland – but since 2002, it has been slowly transformed back to what a native grassland would have looked like hundreds of years ago. As such, the prairie area of Orland Grassland Park is home to many rare grassland birds that find sanctuary in the native grassland habitat. In addition to the prairie, the area contains wetlands, oak savannahs, scrublands, and woodland areas. Wildflowers abound, along with multitudes of butterflies, grasshoppers, dragonflies, and birds. Even larger mammals inhabit the area, including coyotes, raccoons, and an occasional family of skunks.
Visitors to Orland Grassland Park can meander through the park’s rolling topography on dirt and gravel trails, where photography is encouraged but where all native species are protected from collectors. The park is protected from invasive brush as well, by volunteers who clear it and replace it with a variety of native species.
