One of the Best Green Places in Gastonia, North Carolina
Rankin Lake Park is one of the oldest parks in Gastonia, having been constructed in 1922 and in continuous operation since that time. The expansive park includes many natural areas, including hardwood forests, meadows, open spaces, and an 80-acre lake, Rankin Lake. The lake is a popular destination for bank fishing or fishing from one of the two wooden piers. Kaylor Creek is another popular water spot in the park, where hikers can cross over the park on the wooden boardwalk.
Rankin Lake Park is set up to support a variety of outdoor activities. Ample picnic areas are available, with lakeside corporate picnic shelters and nine smaller picnic shelters available for rent. Recreation enthusiasts will enjoy the park’s 18-hole disc golf course along with the horseshoes pits and open fields for playing soccer or softball. Hikers and bikers will enjoy the 1.5-mile paved trail that goes around the perimeter of the park, while off-road hikers/bikers can jump on the Highland Rail Trail system from Rankin Park.
